Even though it’s estimated that around 30 percent of adults in the United States do not drink, it can seem awkward to start dating someone new while being sober. I don’t know about you, but for me, when I was drinking, anytime I met someone new, we went out for drinks. Hell, half of the time I was drunk WHEN I met someone new. But the good news is that you can date while being sober, and it can actually be a better experience. Here are a few things you will figure out as you start dating without drinking.
1. There are many alternatives to getting drinks.
There are a ton of things to do that don’t involve drinking, and most of the time, these things involve a more creative date atmosphere anyway. Maybe you go out for coffee. Maybe you go to a juice bar or a smoothie bar. Maybe you go to a museum or go for a hike. There are a lot of different options that are available to you.
2. You’ll make better decisions.
I’m sure you have so many times where you’ve woken up with someone that you don’t even know why you hooked up with. The night before, maybe you even felt like they were annoying or you had no chemistry, but alcohol can make anyone look like a great person to sleep with.
3. You will have more genuine connections.
When you are sober, you are able to be more honest and think clearly. You are able to really feel your feelings, listen to other people in a more authentic way, and be your true self. This means that the connections that you have with others will be far more sincere.
4. You will know when you’re actually ready to have sex.
When you’re drinking, you end up sleeping with people just because. There is a lot of awkward tumbling and hasty condom unwrapping. When you are sober, you don’t feel like you are in as much of a rush. And you are able to more clearly assess where the relationship is and what you are comfortable with.
There are many reasons to enjoy sober dating more than dating while drinking. These are just a few. The best way to discover the benefits of sober dating is just to try it!
